SP and Alliances/Peace

Does having Alliances/peace treaties affect the amount of SP you get?

Peace does not, alliances do. If you win a game alone, you will get your earned SP during that game, plus half of the SP of the defeated enemy. If all opponents have been defeated and only allied players are left, you also win the game, but the half of the SP gained from your enemies, will be split between all the allies. So, if you have more allies, you will earn less SP when winning.

But on a turn by turn basis, there is no SP penalty for being in an alliance?

Nope

Its actually a good idea to somehow punish alliances.
Either disallow allied victory and make alliances break as soon as the allied parties are the only ones left or punish allied victory by not giving any SP bonuses.
In an FFA game alliances SHOULD NOT be encouraged.
If one is so bent on playing a team game than he should setup a TEAM game.

Since when exactly? I've never seen it. I can even add up all the SP earned and shared by the players and nothing seems to be taken away at all.

False.

You just earn less because it is divided amongst all allies, instead of all going to you.
